Day 10: Trou aux Cerfs

"Trou aux Cerfs" is a dormant volcano situated near Curepipe in the centre of the island. It's 300 metres in diameter and 80 meters deep. It's possible to go down via trails going around the crater, but it's quite dangerous unless you're well equipped, and because the area hasn't been maintained, it's not recommended.

From the top, there is a panoramic view of the surrounding areas, including Curepipe, the "Rampart" mountain (also called "Three udders") in the West, and "Saint Pierre" mountain on the Northwest.

The "three udders"

Being a dormant volcano, it means that it could "wake up" at any stage, although it's unlikely to happen in our lifetime. Still, when you think that one of the biggest city in Mauritius has been built around it, it's a bit frightening...

You can climb on top of them, there are regular hiking trips organised for courageous people (not like me!!)
